SCOTT CITY -- The Scott City School Board named former Caruthersville coach Jackie Johnson new head football coach at a special meeting on Wednesday night.
Johnson will take over for Jason Burkman, who unexpectedly resigned two weeks ago.
"I'm very excited to be named head coach," said Johnson. "I came to Scott City to be an assistant, but I like the challenge of being a head coach. All of a sudden, I'm sitting in the head chair again."
Johnson takes over a team that went 4-6 last season, returning seven offensive and seven defensive starters.
"The one thing I have seen is the kids are very hungry," said Johnson. "They're wanting to win. Scott City has been a powerhouse for many years, and they're wanting to get back to that."
At Caruthersville, Johnson compiled a record of 12-28 in four seasons. He plans on brining his same offensive philosophy, getting away from Burkman's power running game from last season.
"I'll bring in what I do," said Johnson. "While at Caruthersville, I ran out of the I-formation with a very good running back. I really feel I can implement that system here at Scott City. These kids are ready for some success. We're going to see if we can do it this year."
Johnson's assistant coach will be Jerry Tucker.
