Notre Dame topples Sikeston in district

CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Sikeston Lady Bulldog soccer team was eliminated in the Class 3, District 1 Tournament with a 5-0 defeat at the hands of top-seeded Notre Dame on Monday.

Sikeston finishes its season at 4-13. Notre Dame rolled out to a 4-0 lead at the half and were never threatened.

"They're a real strong team," said Sikeston head coach Derrick Long. "We came out a little sluggish. Anytime you're playing the No. 1 seed at home you're fighting an uphill battle. It's hard to get a lot of scoring opportunities against a team like that."

Notre Dame out-shot Sikeston 19-5 in the game. Sikeston goal-keeper Audra Wooley had 14 saves.

Lauren Mehner had two goals for Notre Dame. Megan Holloway, Sierra Ellis and Amanda Dirnberger each had goals. Jesse Westrich, Allison Essner and Emily Essner each had assists.

Notre Dame plays No. 2 seeded St. Vincent on Wednesday at 7 p.m.

On Saturday, Sikeston defeated Fredericktown 10-0 to advance to the semifinals of the tournament. Allison Blurton had five goals for the Lady Bulldogs.

"Having four wins this year is a big year for us," said Long. "Hopefully we can improve more even next year. I think we're getting a lot better. Last year we scored one goal all year. This year we added speed to our team with five starting freshmen."

Sikeston loses just one senior in Fleming Silverthorn.
