SIKESTON - The Daily Standard's Calendar Girl for April, Laura Gelsheimer, is one of the 12 finalists in the Miss Sikeston Contest. The 17-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Merle Gelsheimer is a sports enthusiast active in softball, volleyball, tennis. She also enjoys singing and her favorite subjects are biology and math. She plans to attend college with the hopes of some day becoming a pharmacist.

Sheriff Bill Ferrell is opposed in his bid for reelection to a four-year term by A.E. "Bud" Mills while Lonnie Ponder has filed for coroner and will face Scott Amick, the incumbent, in the August Democratic primary.
