DEXTER -- Robert Lane, 87, formerly of Essex, died April 22, 2005, at his home.

Born Feb. 14, 1918, at Essex, son of the late George Wesley and Ellen Elizabeth Dunham Lane, he was a retired farmer. A member of the Trotter General Baptist Church near Essex, he was a former member of the Essex Masonic Lodge.

On Oct. 17, 1937, at Bloomfield, he married Violetta Warren who preceded him in death on April 16, 1992. He then married Lillie Peck Duggins on Feb. 5, 1999, at Cape Girardeau, and she survives of the home at Dexter. Other survivors include: two sons, James Lane of Flint, Mich., and Michael Lane of St. Louis; one stepson, Darrol Peck of Jasper, Ala.; one foster son, Charles Chadwell of Hot Springs, Ark.; one stepdaughter, Judi Wilkison of Dexter; and six grandchildren, 10 stepgrandchildren, 12 great-grandchildren and nine great-stepgrandchildren.

In addition to his first wife, four brothers, Harold Lane, George Lane, Eugene Lane and Truman Lane; and two sisters, Thelma Frye and Theta Welch, preceded him in death.

Visitation is from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter, where services will be conducted at 11 a.m. Monday. The Rev. John Lane and Dr. Vyron Yount will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Taylor Cemetery near Essex.
