MALDEN -- Allan Rettig picked up his fifth win in seven weeks of Late Model point racing at the Malden Speedway. In an exciting race with no caution flags, Rettig and Billy James pulled away early. James took the lead from Rettig on lap 3, coming around the outside down the front straight. Todd Hall joined the leaders by lap five and took second from Rettig for a lap at the mid point of the race.

By lap 15, Rettig and Hall were hot on James' bumper for the lead. Rettig dove low out of turn two on lap 16 to retake the lead. Hall came around James a lap later to grab second. With one to go, Hall and Rettig were even coming out of turn four and went wheel to wheel for the final lap before Rettig prevailed at the finish line. Scott Gibbs took fourth followed by Scott Tracer.

Doug Moore, Malden's Super Street Track Champion of 2001, made his move into Modified racing a successful one with his first feature win of 2002. Moore led all 20 laps despite being relentlessly chased by Jared Wagster. Wagster looked low for an opening a couple of times midway through the race and had pulled almost even on the outside as the lead pair sped under the white flag. Moore was up to the challenge and held on for the checkered. Greg King was a close third, followed by Larry Hull and Jeremy Conner.

Heat winners were Hull, Moore, and Wagster.

Greg King's third place finish propels him to the top of the points standings. Claudie Cook, Brad Buck, and Larry Hull are tied for second, 12 back.

Jason Pennington, track champion in 2001 Cruiser class along with Eric Allison, moved into the Hobby Class for 2002 and picked up his first feature win of the year. Pennington dove out of turn two at the start of the race to grab the lead from the outside second row and led all 15 laps. Richard Greenway and Pennington waged quite a duel following a lap nine restart with the challenger looking high and low for an opening. Steve Hughes joined the lead pair for the final lap as Pennington held on for a well earned trip to victory lane. Jason Robards returned to the top five following two weeks of mechanical problems.

Tim Winchester challenged early and settled for fifth. Heat winners were Hughes and Greenway.

Steve Martin retains a 38 point lead in the standings, despite his absence this week. Greenway is 20 ahead of Pennington for second.

Jared Wagster remained in the thick of the Pure Street points race, picking up his fifth feature win of the year. Wagster drove the 34 car owned by Johnny Houart in place of his normal 007 rocket. Points leader, Nathan Rettig, grabbed the lead from the outside front row, but that lead would only last four laps.

Wagster got an excellent run out of turn two and overtook Rettig down the back straight. Wagster pulled to a convincing quarter lap lead at the finish line. Rettig held on for second. Dietrich Bollinger, who challenged the leaders early, got loose coming out of turn two late in the race and battled to hang on to third place, just edging Kevin Holman the final lap. Chuck Tilley took fifth.

Heat winners were Holman and Rettig. Rettig currently holds a 14 point lead over Bollinger, and 18 ahead of Wagster.

Dustin Dunning and Adam Brown won a good battle with Chad Donner and Jason Simpson to pick up an apparent second place finish in the Cruiser Feature.

Apparent winners in the F50 failed post race inspection giving the Lucky 13 their third win of the points season. Darren Spillman and Jason Simpson in the 43 car took third.

Curtis Hale and Doyle Null took the checkered flag in the Cruiser Consolation. Malden Speedway racing July 12 will have Go-Kart racing along with points racing in all five regular classes.
