SIKESTON -- The Elks had a season to remember in the American League of Sikeston Area Youth Baseball this year, finishing with an overall record of 11-4.

The squad managed to beat every team in the league, placing third in the regular season, then taking first in the year-end tournament.

"We had a very successful season, I was real proud of the boys," said Elks coach Dan Obermark. "They played well together and we got to the point where we were hitting up and down the lineup."

After going 8-4 in the regular season, the Elks entered the tournament as the No. 3 seed. From there, the team turned it on like a light switch.

After defeating Steward Steel in the first round, the Elks were faced with the daunting task of beating Fabick, a team that had defeated them twice.

The third time turned out to be a charm though, as the Elks pulled out a huge win. The squad advanced to the finals, and beat Old Security for the tournament title.

"We came through," said Obermark. "Our game against Fabick was probably the most exciting game of the tournament."

Jody Jackson played first base for the Elks, Todd Garner was at second, Jacob Thompson played third and Josh Williams was at short.

Jimmy Obermark was the pitcher and Tanner Bryant was behind the plate. The outfield consisted of Amos Helms in left, Kingston Arthur in center and Brandon Newell in right.

"I was proud of everybody," said Obermark. "I thought Amos Helms made some big improvements. Josh Williams is always one of my favorite players, and is a good hustler. Todd Garner also made some big improvements hitting this year. I think everybody improved."

The Elks had three all-stars this year. Obermark and Bryant both made the first team, and Williams made the second team.

Sonny's Solid Waste won the American League regular season championship.

"I'm glad all of the kids came out to play," added Obermark. "I hope that more will come out next year. We've got a great program here when you look at all the other towns. Sikeston can compete with anybody in the state year after year."
