Bertrand man killed in accident

Members of the Miner Fire Department help Monty D. George into an air-evac helicopter after an accident Saturday afternoon.

MINER -- A Mississippi County resident sustained fatal injuries in a head-on collision Saturday in Scott County.

At 12:40 p.m. on Malone Avenue in Miner city limits in front of Ag-Mart, an accident occurred as eastbound motorist Monty D. George, 41, of Bertrand crossed the center line and struck the westbound vehicle, driven by Kevin R. Hughes, 37, of Benton, head-on.

Upon arrival at the accident scene, Miner police requested the fire department to extinguish a fire in one of the vehicles. The driver of the vehicle, Hughes, was pulled from the vehicle by unknown subjects.

George had to be extricated from his truck by Miner Fire personnel and was then air lifted to St. Francis Medical Center in Cape Girardeau where he was pronounced dead at 1:49 p.m.

Hughes received a head injury and some burns from the fire and was transported by ambulance to Missouri Delta Medical Center in Sikeston where he was kept for observation.

Another weekend accident occurred Sunday and injured a Stoddard County resident after the driver struck a house. The Patrol reports at 7:25 a.m. 27-year-old Moses Grayson of Essex was traveling on Route KK, three miles south of Essex, and an accident occurred as Grayson traveled across County Road 732 and struck a house.

Grayson sustained moderate injuries and was taken by ambulance to Missouri Southern Healthcare in Dexter.
