SIKESTON - The Sikeston junior varsity football team lost to Blytheville (Ark.) on Monday 26-22 at Sikeston Public Schools Stadium.

Sikeston rallied from a 20-6 halftime deficit but came up short in the end. All of that despite the Chickasaws playing several juniors and a few seniors in the contest.

"We performed really well in the second half," said Sikeston head coach Charlie Vickery. "We stood up to the challenge. We played physical with them and we beat them on both sides of the ball in the second half."

Blytheville, employing a no-huddle, spread offense, looked unstoppable at first, scoring on its first two possessions with ease.

But the Bulldogs kept the Chickasaw offense out of the end zone the rest of the night. The other two scores Blytheville got came on an interception return and a fake punt.

Blytheville got on the board first when Demarcus Smith caught a 33-yard touchdown pass in the first quarter. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score 6-0.

Sikeston tied the game in the second quarter when quarterback Bryce Wibbenmeyer took the keeper from the 1-yard line. The two-point conversion failed to keep the score at 6-6.

Later in the quarter, Blytheville's quarterback plowed in from the 1-yard line to pull ahead. The two-point conversion pass was complete to make the score 14-6.

At the 4:49 mark, Blytheville's Jonathan Biggs returned an interception 60 yards for a score to make it 20-6.

Sikeston closed the gap in the third quarter when Germetrious Dixon scored from seven yards out at the 4:29 mark.

Wibbemeyer's two-point conversion pass was successful to Ross Merideth to make it 20-14. Sikeston's best chance to get back into the game quickly faded when Blytheville, on 4th-and-25, faked the punt, directly snapping to Markese Allen who went untouched 46 yards for the score with 7:54 left. The two-point conversion failed, leaving the score 26-14. Sikeston scored one last time with 3:32 left when Felante Larry scored on a 20-yard reverse. Dixon scored on the two-point conversion run to make it 26-22.

That was as close as Sikeston would get.

Larry led Sikeston with 151 all-purpose yards. Wibbenmeyer was 6-of-9 passing for 79 yards. Merideth caught three passes for 38 yards. Brandon Williams had one catch for 25 yards. On the ground, Dixon had 34 yards on seven carries. Others were Wayne Guthrie (3-10) and Wibbenmeyer (6-19).

Sikeston (2-1) will host Poplar Bluff's junior varsity on Monday at 6 p.m.
