The Sikeston Area Chamber of Commerce has two projects going on in the month of October.

Our Lifetime Achievement Award/Roast will be held Thursday, Oct. 16, beginning at 6:30 p.m. at the Clinton Building. Our honoree this year is Harold Jones, a veteran with the U.S. Army in two campaigns and afterward attended college at Southeast Missouri State. He was a teacher and principal for Sikeston Public Schools and became administrator of Missouri Delta Medical Center for 33 years. Mr. Jones has served on many boards and participated in a number of organizations. This is the community's opportunity to thank him for his years of service to the Sikeston area.

The evening will include appetizers and desserts provided by our member restaurants and caterers. Tickets are $20 per person and reservations can be made by calling the SACC office at 471-2498.

The other project the Chamber is working on is a new one called the "SACC Spirit Awards." Awards are given out each month, one for business and one for residential with a criteria that is followed by the selection committee.

Examples of the criteria for the business award include business has made improvements on the inside and/or outside of their building; business shows outstanding customer service; business is clean and has attractive appearance; employees are cheerful, neat, helpful and knowledgeable; and the business is involved and supportive of the community.

The residential award criteria includes some of the following: homeowner/tenant who makes a significant improvement to their property/neighborhood; lawn is nice and nicely trimmed on a regular basis; shrubbery and flowers are well maintained; landscaping is attractive, expresses personality and contributes to the ambiance of the community. Only the curbside view (front yard) will be considered.

Each of our winners will have signage announcing them as our award winner of the month. We want to recognize those individuals and businesses that take the initiative to care for their properties and show consideration for the public and their pride in the community. Our winners will receive recognition through our local media, in the SACC newsletter and on our Website.

Our winners in the business category this month are House of Color and Ultimate Flooring and our residential winner is Lanell Turner. Congratulations and thank you for doing your part to make the Sikeston area a little nicer to look at.
