PORTAGEVILLE - Two men are in custody in connection with a robbery late Wednesday at a gasoline convenience store.

At 11:45 p.m. Wednesday, Portageville Police were notified of a robbery at the Gas-N-Go, which is located just off the Interstate 55 interchange. Employees stated a man entered the business wearing a windbreaker, indicated he had a gun in his pocket and demanded money. After receiving the money he fled on foot into a soybean field located southwest of the business.

Officers began a search immediately upon arrival, said Portageville Police Chief Ronnie Adams. Also assistance was received from the New Madrid County Sheriff's Department, Missouri Highway Patrol and the canine unit with the Hayti Police.

Officers located the man about 2 a.m. today in the field, approximately a half mile from the robbery scene, and recovered the money taken in the robbery. Adams noted the suspect gave up peacefully and officers found the "gun" he had indicated he had was actually a soft drink bottle.

The man stated another individual was involved in the incident as well. The second suspect was arrested at a Portageville residence. The men currently are being held in the New Madrid County Jail, pending the filing of formal charges.

Adams praised the quick reaction of the employees and the assistance of the other departments in bringing the incident to a successful conclusion. "This really is an example of teamwork. We were able to get on it quickly so it didn't give him an opportunity go any place," said Adams. "We are glad no one got hurt."
