POPLAR BLUFF - The Sikeston junior varsity football team lost to Poplar Bluff 19-8 on Monday.

Sikeston fell behind early and never recovered.

"The second half we played much better," said Sikeston head coach Charlie Vickery. "We just got into a hole early."

Sikeston trailed 7-0 at the half. The Bulldogs had a touchdown taken away by a penalty. Poplar Bluff responded with a 95-yard drive. Later, the Mules intercepted a pass and returned it for a score to lead 19-0.

Sikeston got on the board when quarterback Stephen Miller took a 1-yard sneak for the score. Miller then found Scotty Keenan for the two-point conversion for the final tally.

Sikeston (3-2) will play at Jackson on Oct. 15 at 6 p.m.

DEXTER -- New Madrid County Central's junior varsity squad improved to 3-0 Monday with a 20-16 victory over Dexter.

Sophomore Edgar Givens caught one touchdown pass and ran in another to pace the Eagle offense.

"Givens had a great ballgame," said NMCC coach Arlen Pixley. "He's learning how to use his speed and athleticism and his stiff arm. He looked good on a couple of reverses tonight. He's coming along real well."

Quarterback Chris Nance threw two TD passes in the game, with the other going to freshman Eugene Cooper. Brandon Fields was 2-for-3 on PATs.

"We've played well the last two weeks in a row, both offensively and defensively," said Pixley. "Vaughn Shephard did a good job running the ball, Daniel Eddy played well at center, Brandon Williamson did a good job at defensive back, and Nance is throwing the ball well. We've got confidence in him."

NMCC's junior varsity team will host Cape Central next Monday.
