BERNIE - Byron Keith "Gabe" Pointer, 76, died Aug. 2, 2004, at the Malden Nursing and Rehab Center.

Born Sept. 11, 1927, in Bernie, son of the late Gabe A. and Ida Ellen Neal Pointer, he retired as a commercial vehicle inspector for the Missouri State Highway Patrol after 32 years of service. He served on the Bernie School Board for many years, was former Bernie police chief and supported various community activities including the Bernie Mules. A veteran of the National Guard, he was a member of the Bernie Christian Church.

On Nov. 14, 1951, at Piggott, Ark., he married Elsie Margaret Cuevas who survives of the home.

Other survivors include: two sons and daughters-in-law, Robert S. and Janice Barney of Dexter and Kent and Jenny Pointer of Denver; four daughters and three sons-in-law, Eleanor Marie and Floyd Sherfield of Hot Springs, Ark., Margaret Diane and Ken Hollis of Metairie, La., Ivette and Andy Rothschild of Clayton and Marla Vanesa Pointer of Denver; two sisters, Thelma Plympton of Waterford, Mich., and Jean Yeager of Dexter; and 11 grandchildren and seven great-grandchildren.

Also preceding him in death were two brothers, Fred Pointer and Henry Pointer; and four sisters, Eunice Reeves, Julia Burke, Nora Pointer and Dora Pointer.

Visitation is from 5 to 8 p.m. Friday at the Bernie High School cafeteria, where services will be conducted at 2 p.m. Saturday. The Revs. Keith Warner and Van Spry will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Bernie Cemetery.
