SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Department of Public Safety has one person in custody in connection with the death of a baby in September.

The investigation began on Sept. 17 when officers with Sikeston DPS were called to the 300 block of Alabama at 7:19 a.m.

Upon their arrival, officers found a five-month old infant not breathing. Officers performed CPR on the infant. The child was taken to Missouri Delta Medical Center and was later pronounced dead.

According to DPS reports, the child was sleeping at 1 a.m. when it was put to bed and the mother was unable to awake the baby at 7:15 a.m. Officers did find a trash bag on the floor next to the baby's bed.

While investigating the matter, detectives were able to get a confession Wednesday night; the name of the individual is being withheld pending filing of formal charges.

Officials did advise that a family member has not been charged in the case.
