BENTON - Scott County rationing headquarters reports only four permits for purchase of new tires had been issued in the first week of operation. All were issued for heavy vehicles.
RISCO - The situation is normal and residents have returned to their homes after an L.P. gas scare. Around 100 people were evacuated as a safety precaution. The scare developed Jan. 10 when a 12,000-gallon tank behind the school settled from cold weather and snapped a fuel line.
DEXTER - Four downtown businesses were destroyed by one of three fires fought by the Dexter Fire Department over the weekend. The businesses were burned by a Friday blaze reported at 10:50 p.m.

BENTON - Vacillating Missouri statutes on assessments on mobile homes are making life tougher for Scott County Clerk Bob Kielhofner and Assessor Gerald Inman. "It's burdensome on us," complained Kielhofner. "It's a hell of a load." Tax bills went out last November and the complaints have been rolling in ever since. The problem is simple to find, but hard to fix.

SIKESTON - After planting more than 70 Washington hawthorne, river birch and bradford pears along Malone Avenue, Bobby Crosier, Mike Burton and Mark Heeb tied the trees to stakes Thursday morning. The trees were bought with money from the Missouri Branch Out Program, a state grant for beautification in cities in Missouri. The state will reimburse Sikeston up to 75 percent of the cost of the trees.
