Barney Miller

DEXTER - Barney Miller, 81, died Jan. 11, 2001, at his home.

Born July 14, 1920, at Lutesville, son of the late Robert Emmett and Elizabeth Trotter Miller, he was a member of the First United Methodist Church in Dexter. The former owner and publisher of the Daily Statesman in Dexter was a member of the Missouri Press Association, past president of the Southeast Missouri Press Association and a 1998 inductee to the Missouri Newspaper Hall of Fame. He was also a member of the Dexter Kiwanis Club, past president of the Dexter Chamber of Commerce, former Elks Citizen of the Year and former member of the Dexter Zoning Committee and Dexter Library Board. Miller was also a volunteer literacy tutor at the Mingo Job Corps and a U.S. Army veteran of World War II.

On June 6, 1942, at Rolla, he married Marie Braidlow who preceded him in death on Dec. 26, 1994.

Survivors include: two sons, Thomas Miller of Lake Havasu City, Ariz., and Joe Miller of Jonesboro, Ill.; one daughter, Annabeth Miller of Dexter; and seven grandchildren and two great-grandchildren.

He was also preceded in death by one son, John Miller; three brothers, Paul Trotter, Richard Trotter and Arthur Trotter; and one sister, Rebeccah Erickson.

Friends may call from 5 to 8 p.m. today at Rainey-Mathis Funeral Home in Dexter.

Services are scheduled for 1 p.m. Monday at the First United Methodist Church in Dexter with the Rev. Fred Leist officiating.

Burial will follow in the Dexter Cemetery.
