SIKESTON -- Jackson swept Sikeston's junior high basketball teams on Wednesday night, winning the ninth grade game 45-43 and the eighth grade game 43-36.
Sikeston freshman Felante Larry had a game-winning 3-point attempt at the buzzer but it was off the front of the rim.
"We played hard but we made some poor decisions because we're a little out of shape from the break," said Sikeston ninth grade coach Chris Sarakas.
Sikeston was led by Josh Alvarado with 12 points, followed by Larry with 10, Avis White with six, and Matt Limbaugh with five. Desmond Jackson and Tyler Woodson each contributed four, while Johnny Bland added two.
Meystedt paced the Indians with 19 points.
Sikeston led 16-8 after one quarter but fell apart in the second quarter, getting outscored 12-0.
"They just matched our pressure and they stepped ahead of us," said Sarakas.
In the eighth grade game, Travis Hudson led all Sikeston scorers with eight points, followed by Rod Moore with seven and Trey Spence with six.
Colt Pruitt scored five and Leonard Robinson contributed four points. Jordan Mason, D.J. Green and Daniel Alvarado each finished with two. Stone led all Jackson scorers with 13 points.
It was an improved performance by the eighth grade team, which lost by a larger margin the first time they played Jackson.
"This game we were in it most of the way," said eighth grade coach Kevin Self. "We're getting better. The kids aren't giving up. They're continuing to play hard, we just need a couple of breaks here and there and then maybe we can get a 'W'. Right now that would cure a lot of what ails us."
Sikeston's eighth graders will host Charleston on Monday in an A and B matchup starting at 6 p.m. The ninth grade team will play in the Poplar Bluff Tournament on Monday.
