NEW MADRID - There are no lines forming for candidates to file for county offices in New Madrid County. Filing opens at 8 a.m. Jan. 14 for seven county offices as well as for the post of Democratic and Republican committeemen and committeewomen. The primary election will be conducted on Aug. 4 with the general election set for Nov. 3. County offices to be filled include four-year terms as sheriff, assessor, public administrator, surveyor and coroner. The posts of first and second district county commissioners, which are two-year terms, will also be filled.

SIKESTON - They aren't quite like the flying terrors of Alfred Hitchcock's thriller "The Birds," but Sikeston's bird population is definitely becoming a nuisance. Instead of attacking citizens as they stroll down the city's streets, blackbirds and starlings have been roosting by the thousands in area trees. To combat the airborne nuisances, the city owns two "bird boomers," - propane cannons that make a deafening gunshot-type sound. Residents can make the same kind of noises with pots and pans. But it must be done before dark. After dark, the birds refuse to move.
