CAPE GIRARDEAU - The Sikeston boys track and field team had a good day at the Cape Relays in Cape Girardeau on Saturday.
The Bulldogs had several personal and season records set during the meet, which is designed for individual medals and not team points.
"I'm not saying it was an outstanding day, but it was a decent day for us," said Sikeston head coach Jerry Dement. "It was kind of a fun meet, there's no pressure for team points. The kids are running for distances, times and individual medals. They enjoy and I enjoy it. It's a less-stressful day. It was beautiful weather with good competition. We had a good time."
There were 10 teams involved in the meet including district rival Perryville.
Sikeston's Michael Colon was named male MVP of the meet with his steady performance in a number of events.
He set a personal record with a triple jump leap of 45-feet, 2-inches to place third.
He also took second in the long jump with a leap of 21'9" and ran a leg on the second place 4 x 100 meter relay team which included senior Keena Hatcher and sophomores Thomas Elery and Felante Larry. The team ran the event in a season-best time of 43.58.
"That was voted on by the coaches so getting that award was nice for Mike," said Dement of Colon's MVP award. "He didn't have an outstanding day by his measures, but it was a good day all the way around. We're proud of him for getting that award."
Sophomore Tyler Woodson took first in the 110 meter high hurdles with a personal best time of 14.9 seconds.
Andy Croxford put out one of Sikeston's top performances with a personal best throw of 47-feet, 4-inches in the shot put to take second place individually.
Senior Devante Larry won the 300 meter intermediate hurdles with a time of 40.04.
Sikeston's 4 x 200 meter relay team, consisting of Tori Rose, Elery, F. Larry and Hatcher ran a season-best time of 1:29.98 but they were nipped at the tape for a second place finish.
Of the six field events, the Bulldogs entered five of them and placed in the top three in all five. The Bulldogs didn't enter a team in the high jump relay.
The Bulldogs' pole vault relay team of Jordan Phenicie, Kirk Butler and Ryan Gibson placed third.
The shot put team of Joe Johnson, Croxford and Drew Cole placed second.
The discus team of Johnson, Taylor Old and Malcolm Williams placed second.
The long jump team of F. Larry, Apollo Patterson and Colon placed second.
The triple jump team of Colon, F. Larry and freshman Travis Hudson placed second.
On the track, the 3200 meter relay team of freshman Clay Lincoln, Quinton Lamb, John Wiley and Dale Ham placed third with a time of 8:34.
The sprint medley relay team of Brandon Williams, Patterson, D. Larry and Lamb placed fourth.
Lincoln took second in the individual 3200 meter run with a time of 10:20. Ham followed up closely with a third place finish at 10:22.
The 1600 meter relay of Rose, Elery, D. Larry and Lamb took fourth with a time of 3:33.
"Most of our events we're making some improvements," said Dement. "There's a couple where we're not improving like we need to so we're going to have to put some pressure on to get better. We need to shift into high gear because we're coming up on the end of the year. We're now at one meet a week so we can get some consistent training. Most of our events we're doing well but there's still a couple that we need to improve in. We're not near satisfied with what we've done so far."
The Bulldogs will run on Friday at the 14-team Poplar Bluff Invitational.
