Two hurt in morning car wreck

SIKESTON - A MoDOT worker is in critical condition at Missouri Delta Medical Center after a two-vehicle accident this morning.

According to the Sikeston Department of Public Safety, the accident occurred at approximately 7:08 a.m. when a Missouri Department of Transportation westbound van driven by Jon Koenig, 54, apparently pulled out from Highway HH onto Highway 61, resulting in a collision with the northbound vehicle driven by Laura Schwendeman, 22.

Schwendeman's vehicle was knocked into a ditch and the van remained in the roadway blocking the northbound lane for nearly an hour before being removed.

Both drivers required extrication and were taken to MDMC by ambulance. DPS officials described Koenig's injuries as severe and Schwendeman's injuries as moderate.
