Suspect shot in altercation with officer

NEW MADRID - An altercation between a New Madrid County deputy and a subject resisting arrest led to a man being shot Friday evening.

According to reports, the sheriff's office received a call at 8:55 p.m. in reference to an altercation at Bonnie's Bar and Grill in Gideon.

When Officer Johnny Wilburn arrived at the scene, he made contact with the subject causing the problem. After the subject proceeded to resist arrest, he was maced. The suspect continued to assault the officer, which resulted in the subject being shot. He was taken to Twin Rivers Medical Center in Kennett, where he is listed in stable condition.

Due to injuries sustained in the altercation, Wilburn was taken to the John J. Pershing Veterans Administration Medical Center in Poplar Bluff, and is also listed in stable condition.

The New Madrid County Sheriff's Department and Missouri State Highway Patrol are investigating the incident. Formal charges are expected to be filed on the suspect at a later date.
