CHARLESTON -- Two Mississippi County jailers are charged with sexual misconduct with inmates, and arraignment for both men has been set for 9:
15 a.m. March 23 before Associate Circuit Judge T. Lynn Brown in Charleston.
According to Mississippi County Sheriff Keith Moore, following a two-month investigation, the county's detention center jailer, Stephens P. Moore, 59, was arrested and charged Monday with the class D felony of sexual contact with an inmate or resident of a jail, prison or correctional facility. Moore's bond was set at $20,000.
On Wednesday another jailer, Donald Ray Evans, 57, was arrested and charged with class A misdemeanor sexual misconduct in the first degree. His bond was set at $2,500.
"This type of behavior is totally unacceptable and the citizens of Mississippi County deserve better and I demand better," the sheriff said in a statement.
Incidents leading to the arrested occurred in December 2004. Both Moore and Evans bonded out, and their employment was terminated.
The sheriff said, "My staff is expected to be professional and anyone guilty of such behavior will be prosecuted."
