BASEBALL

Blake Essner threw a five-inning no-hitter to lead the Bulldogs to a road rout.

Essner struck out 11 and walked two in what coach Jeff Graviett said is the only Notre Dame no-hitter he can recall in his six years as coach.

Aaron Jenkins had four hits and four RBIs to lead Notre Dame's 16-hit attack. Jacob Essner, Blake Essner and Mitch Glueck had two hits apiece. Lucas Dirnberger added a grand slam.

Jackson improved to 2-0 with a home victory. Tyler Beussink led the Indians with two hits. Joel Penrod earned the pitching win, allowing only two hits in five innings. Kyle Brown pitched two innings for the save.

Oran 11, Leopold 1, 5 innings

Chase Seyer struck out eight and allowed two hits in 4 2/3 innings to help Oran cruise to a season-opening win on the road.

Austin Dumey and Paul Bucher had two hits apiece. Bucher had two RBIs.

Scott City surrendered six unearned runs in a makeup game at New Madrid.

Andy Stephens allowed eight runs, but only two earned, in 5 2/3 innings. Stephens struck out six, walked three and allowed six hits.

Kyle Curry had two hits for the Rams (0-2).

Bell City had 15 hits in a season-opening road victory.

Kerry Lasters, Cody Bailey and Chris Wright had three hits apiece for the Cubs, and Clay Dover and Garrett McIntyre added two hits each.

Clay Dover won on the mound. For Scott County Central, Mark Freed had three hits and Pershard Owens added two.

SOFTBALL

Scott City scored eight runs in the fourth inning to pull away from host Oak Ridge in five innings. Jessica Warren went 4-for-4 for the Rams (2-0) with a homerun and two doubles, while teammate Emily Essner had two hits and earned the pitching win.

Oak Ridge managed only one hit, a single by Erin Hahs, and all six of its run were unearned.

Oran scored two runs in the top of the seventh to post a narrow road victory.

Leopold fell to 1-1 despite a 4-for-4 performance from Lori Vandermierden that included a home run, a triple and three RBIs.

Tori St. Cin homered for Oran, and Jodi Urhahn added a triple.
