FARMINGTON -- Sikeston's softball team saw the 2003 season come to an end on Friday with an 8-2 loss to Farmington in the district tournament.
The Lady Bulldogs were held to three hits on the loss.
"We did not hit the ball today," said Sikeston coach Jenny Hobeck. "Their pitcher didn't have exceptional speed -- we just weren't waiting on good pitches. Defensively, we had too many errors."
Paige Silverthorn blasted a solo home run for Sikeston. Allison Blurton was 1-for-3 and scored the team's other run. Barbra Hobbs also had a hit in the loss.
Blurton pitched the first 3 2/3 innings, then Molly Brinkmeyer came in to pitch the final 2 1/3.
Sikeston fell behind 8-0 in the game, but came back to score one run in the sixth inning and one in the seventh. The Lady Bulldogs end the year with a record of 6-10.
"We had a decent season," said Hobeck. "We beat Kelly which was a big accomplishment, we beat Egyptian who's another good team, we played Cape Central close and we played Jackson close. It was definitely a building season for next year."
Sikeston will lose just two starters to graduation: outfielder Kayla Crocker and first baseman/pitcher Jessica Owens.
"The bulk of our team was sophomores this year," said Hobeck. "We're still just a young team making mental mistakes out there. We're only going to get better as the girls get older."
