BENTON - Neighbor Day in Scott County will be held three weeks earlier this year so that the date will come during the nation's call for the $15 billion purchase of war bonds in September.

NEW MADRID - The New Madrid County 4-H Club fair was conducted Thursday and Friday in the New Madrid High School.


POPLAR BLUFF - The Sikeston Babe Ruth All-Star team used a big second inning in which they scored all their runs to defeat Bloomfield 5-1 in the semifinals of the Poplar Bluff Invitational.

SIKESTON - Unemployment rates continued to fall in three counties in the four-county area, but the rate for Mississippi county rose in June.

SIKESTON - The Sikeston City Council Wednesday gave approval for the Department of Public Safety to advertise for sale the city's snorkel-extension pumper fire truck. The city wants to sell the truck with the intention of purchasing a new ladder-extension pumper truck that will better serve the needs of the city, officials said. The city hopes to get $125,000 for the truck , which was purchased in 1985 for just more than $220,000. DPS will not sell the truck until a new ladder-extension truck is purchased.


SIKESTON - The Aqua-A-Thon Awards were presented to swimmers in each age group recently for swimming the most laps. Winners are Kyle Davidson, Ben F. Marshall, Hallie Lambert, Trent Walters, Erin Eberhard, Kate Hux, Matt Evans, Keenan Carraway, Brooke Nelson, Lauren Wilson and Nena Lorenz. Hux was recognized as having raised the most money.
