SIKESTON - The Sikeston girls tennis team lost a close match to Jackson on Tuesday by the score of 5-4 at the Sikeston High School tennis courts.

Sikeston's top three singles players and the number one doubles team all won their matches, but the Lady Bulldogs lost four tight matches which proved to be the difference.

"The girls played really hard," said Sikeston coach Lynne DeWitt. "The top three singles matches were excellent matches. Other matches were close and could've gone either way. Hopefully we can come back on Thursday with a win."

In singles play, Sikeston's Jenni DeWitt defeated Jessica Drum 8-4; Chelsea Gilliland beat Shannon Cobb 8-2; and Tess Marshall beat Chase Crowell 8-4. Jackson's Maddy Bruegging beat Brittney Bohannon 8-6; Sara Hinkebein beat Jessica Colwick 8-2; and Ellyn Beil beat Emily Bowman 8-6.

In doubles, DeWitt and Gilliland beat Drum and Cobb 8-2. But Sikeston dropped their other two doubles matches with Bohannon and Bowman losing to Crowell and Bruegging 5-8; and Marshall and Colwick falling to Hinkebein and Beil 7-9.

Sikeston's only junior varsity winners came in doubles play. Hallie Lambert and Ali Fox won 9-8 (7-2) and Danielle Ahlfield and Lamechia Armstrong won their match 6-1.
