Sikeston soccer falls in double overtime

Friday, September 10, 2004

SIKESTON - The Sikeston soccer team dropped a tough game against Notre Dame, falling 1-0 in double overtime.

Notre Dame finally broke the shutout with a goal by Elliott Vance at the 96th minute.

Vance was able to pick up a deflected cross by Jason Delgado from 20 yards out and sent the game-winning kick into the net on what Sikeston coach Derrick Long called "a great shot."

"I thought it was a great game," said Long. "We were so evenly matched tonight, both defenses made so many stops. Both teams made good offensive runs and at times both teams controlled the midfields. I can't find one thing either team did wrong. It's a shame somebody had to lose because both teams deserved to win. It was an amazing game."

Sikeston out-shot Notre Dame 28-to-25.

Sikeston goalkeeper Scott Droddy made 24 saves.

Sikeston (3-3) will play at Cape Central on Thursday at 6:30 p.m.

Sikeston's junior varsity lost 5-0 to fall to 1-2 on the season.

Notre Dame's Austin Gelsheimer, a Sikeston resident, accounted for one of the junior varsity goals.
