NEW MADRID - Janie Bernice Cowan, 71, died Oct. 12, 2004, at her home. Born May 29, 1933, in New Madrid, daughter of the late Walter and Janie Lee Fox, she had been a resident of the county for 67 years and was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in New Madrid where she had been a Sunday school teacher for 34 years. NEW MADRID - Janie Bernice Cowan, 71, died Oct. 12, 2004, at her home.

Born May 29, 1933, in New Madrid, daughter of the late Walter and Janie Lee Fox, she had been a resident of the county for 67 years and was a member of the First Pentecostal Church in New Madrid where she had been a Sunday school teacher for 34 years. She had also lived in Chicago; Flint, Mich.; and Portageville.

She married Myres A. "Doc" Cowan Sr. in New Madrid. He preceded her in death on July 4, 1993.

Also preceding her in death were one sister, Dorothy Bowen, and one brother, Connie Fox.

Survivors include: two sons, Myres A. "Skipper" Cowan Jr. and Gary Lee "Doc" Cowan of New Madrid; seven daughters, Sandra Phillips of Hazelwood, Mary Beth Hamilton of San Antonio, Texas, Madeleine Cowan and Samantha Fitzgerel of New Madrid, Myra Lov Conyers of East Prairie, Deborah Garrett of Oran, and Donna French of Louisiana, Mo.; one brother, Robert W. Fox of East Bernstadt, Ky.; one sister, Margaret Musgrave of Mountain Home, Ark.; and 20 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Visitation is scheduled for 6 p.m. Friday at the First Pentecostal Church where services will be held at 2 p.m. Saturday with the Rev. Orville McKinney officiating.

Burial will follow in the Evergreen Cemetery on Highway 61 in New Madrid.

Fowler-Sullivan Memorial Chapel of Neelyville is in charge of all arrangements.
