Sikeston Department of Public Safety PSO Todd Irwin does a daily check on the new equipment.

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Department of Public Safety recently improved the safety of fire fighters by acquiring new breathing apparatus and air cylinders.

DPS Director Drew Juden said that 35 Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus and 70 extra air cylinders were purchased with funds from the Homeland Security Fire Grant Program. The breathing apparatus replaced equipment that was 12-15 years old. The SCBA is used almost daily and plays a very important part in keeping the fire fighters safe, Juden said.

The equipment was selected after the department tested different brands of breathing apparatus for comfort, ease of use, durability and cost.

In addition, training costs associated with different types of apparatus were considered before the purchase was made. The equipment was purchased from Banner Fire Equipment in East Alton, Ill.
