SIKESTON - Navy Lt. Val Sharp, son of Mr. and Mrs. C. LaVal Sharp of Sikeston, was commander of a Navy hurricane hunter plane that penetrated the eye of Beulah. The plane located Beulah's position and helped forecasters in Miami predict where Beulah would hit land.

SIKESTON - The advisory council of Adult Basic Education elected Wayne Collins, of the Sikeston Welfare Office, as its chairman and Willie Dixon, president of the local NAACP as its vice president.

NEW MADRID - Opening the week's festivities as part of the Annual New Madrid American Legion Fall festival Monday night was selection of the Tiny Tot King and Queen. Taking top honors in the contest, open to children ages 3 and 4, were Bethany Long, 4-year-old daughter of Charles and Teresa Long of Sikeston, and Joey Higgerson, 4, son of Mr. and Mrs. Danny Higgerson of Kewanee.

SIKESTON - The 43rd Annual American Legion Cotton Carnival got under way with Jack Watkins' "Good Times" entertaining from 7-11 p.m. and the Patti Simmons Dancers performing at 8 p.m. The carnival opened at 6 p.m.

SIKESTON - A talent for athletics and an appetite for legal logic paved the way for Rookie Public Safety Officer Rachael Groener. Nearing the end of her fire and police academy training, she is one of Sikeston's five female public safety officers.

PORTAGEVILLE - A break in is under investigation by the Portageville Police Department. About 8 p.m. Sunday, an employee at Barton's Lumber Co. discovered the back door of the business was broken. Nothing is believed to have been taken during the break in which occurred sometime Saturday night or Sunday.
