EAST PRAIRIE -- East Prairie will have a new football coach on the sideline for tonight's football game against the Kennett Indians.
In a special East Prairie R-2 School Board meeting held Monday night, members voted to suspend head coach Jason Aycock. Assistant coach Gary Scott was promoted to interim head coach and will coach the team tonight when the Eagles take the field against the Kennett Indians.
A special board meeting was held Thursday night as support was voiced for Aycock to return. However, East Prairie superintendent Scott Downing said Friday morning that there had been no change to the school board's original ruling.
"Hopefully now we can move on," Downing said.
Aycock was also suspended from his position as the assistant baseball coach in the spring.
Downing declined to say whether Aycock's suspension was related to the Eagles' performance on the field or off-the-field issues.
Aycock, who left East Prairie after a 3-6 season in 2004, returned to coach the Eagles this season after being an administrator at Portageville for two years.
East Prairie is off to an 0-3 start with losses to Hayti, Corning, Ark., and Scott City.
