CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Sikeston junior varsity basketball team defeated Cape Central in overtime in the final day of the Cape Central Junior Varsity Tournament on Saturday.

Sikeston improved to 11-3 on the season with the 56-53 victory.

The Bulldogs tied the game at 50-50 when Brandon Washington converted a conventional 3-point play with 10 seconds left.

Washington led all scorers with 20 points. He also had five rebounds, five assists and four steals.

Sikeston led 13-11 after one quarter and maintained a 25-23 advantage heading into halftime.

Cape Central took a 42-38 lead into the fourth quarter.

James Bonner followed up with 14 points, including both of Sikeston's field goals in overtime. He also had seven rebounds.

Josh Rodgers came off the bench to score eight points with five rebounds.

Cape Central was led by Shane Nolen's 16 points. Chase Johnson added 13 points.

JUNIOR HIGH

SIKESTON -- The Sikeston freshman basketball team improved to 9-2 on the season with a 46-42 win against Dexter at the Sikeston Middle School on Monday.

It's the second time in four days Sikeston defeated the Bearcats, also winning in the Poplar Bluff Freshman Tournament.

Sikeston trailed 11-8 after one quarter but managed to take a 20-16 lead into halftime.

They would never trail again.

Sikeston led by as much as 33-18 in the third quarter but Dexter rallied to make a game of it, trailing 33-26 heading into the final frame.

Sikeston pulled out the win with clutch free throw shooting, going 7-for-9 in the fourth quarter.

Richard Andrews led the Bulldogs with 15 points. Dominic Fondon added nine points despite foul problems throughout the night. Kelvin Davis chipped in with six points.

Stephens led Dexter with 16 points.
