East Prairie wins in tourney

BERNIE -- The second-seeded East Prairie Eagles advanced to the second round of the Bernie Invitational Tournament on Tuesday with a 68-47 victory against seventh-seeded Bloomfield.

East Prairie got 25 points out of senior Dez Johnson to lead the way for the Eagles. Sophomore Tony Jones had 12 points followed up by Mitchell Winchester with 10 points. Zach Secoy added eight points.

East Prairie was 14-of-18 from the free throw line.

The Eagles will play third-seeded Campbell (85-65 winners over Risco) on Thursday at 7:30 p.m.

In Campbell's victory, the Camels jumped out to an 18-11 first quarter lead and never looked back. They led 37-23 at the half and 57-40 after three quarters.

Risco was led by Andrew Halford with 25 points. Robert Fowler followed up with 10 points.

Risco plays Bloomfield on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.

Woodland Invitational

MARBLE HILL -- Seth Gaines scored a game-high 37 points and hauled in nine rebounds as the Woodland Cardinals pulled off a mild upset with a 72-50 victory over the Oak Ridge Bluejays in the first round of the Woodland Invitational Basketball Tournament.

Woodland, 1-0 overall and the fifth seed in the tourney, used a strong defense to force 30 Bluejay turnovers.

"I was real pleased with our effort on defense," Woodland coach Dave Mirly said. "Our intensity level was really high, and we played really well overall. We out-rebounded them by 14, and that was a big key."

The Cardinals took a 17-6 lead after the first quarter of play before Oak Ridge stormed back to trim the lead to 26-25 at the half. Woodland extended the lead to 45-39 going into the final period before exploding for 27 points in the final eight minutes of regulation.

Chance Barham handed out 10 assists in the win, helping Cody Barrett score 12 and Jordan King tally 10.

Johnnie Price led the Bluejays with 20 points, while Ryan Pohlman added 12 and Jon McMillan chipped in with 11 in the losing effort.

Woodland takes on the top-seeded Cape Girardeau Notre Dame Bulldogs in the semifinals Thursday at 6:30 p.m., while Oak Ridge receives a bye in the next round and moves into the finals of the consolation bracket Friday at 5 p.m.

Four Meadow Heights players reached double figures as the Panthers (No. 2) rolled to a 79-47 win over the Zalma Bulldogs Tuesday in first-round action.

Anthony Bollinger led the charge with 19, Keith Fulton poured in 16, John Long added 14 and Nathan Revelle scored 13 for the Panthers.

Zalma was led by Daniel Schrader's 16 points, while Trevin Taylor scored 10 in the loss.

Meadow Heights will play No. 6 Leopold Thursday at 8 p.m. in the semifinals, and Zalma will take on No. 3 Delta in the consolation bracket Thursday afternoon at 5 o'clock.

Aaron Kinder hit six 3-pointers and finished with 28 points, but it was not enough as the No. 6 Leopold Wildcats pulled off a 73-66 upset of the third-

seeded Bobcats of Delta Tuesday night.

Matt Stoverink paced Leopold with 23 points -- including four treys -- while Tyler Clubb added 18 and Alfred VanGennip scored 13 in the win. Terrence Below and Dustin Anglin tallied 12 and 10 points, respectively, for the Bobcats.

Jackson 66, New Madrid C.C. 6

Jackson opened its season by dropping just two of 14 individual matchups at home.

David Martin had the quick pin for the Indians, needing just 48 seconds to get a fall against Lester Babb at 112 pounds.
