JOHNSTON CITY, Ill. - C.C. "Pat" Groves, 92, passed away at 10 a.m. Jan. 29, 2008, in the Herrin Hospital. Born Feb. 22, 1915, in Johnston City, son of the late Charles C. and Lela Paddock Groves, he a t t e n d e d school in Johnston City and graduated in 1933 from Johnston City High School. He was employed as a Prudential Insurance agent in Sikeston, Mo. for 33 years. He served the local area as a Boy Scout Cub Master for 33 years and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Scouting Award...

JOHNSTON CITY, Ill. - C.C. "Pat" Groves, 92, passed away at 10 a.m. Jan. 29, 2008, in the Herrin Hospital.

Born Feb. 22, 1915, in Johnston City, son of the late Charles C. and Lela Paddock Groves, he a t t e n d e d school in Johnston City and graduated in 1933 from Johnston City High School. He was employed as a Prudential Insurance agent in Sikeston, Mo. for 33 years. He served the local area as a Boy Scout Cub Master for 33 years and was a recipient of the Silver Beaver Scouting Award.

In 1999, he moved back to his hometown of Johnston City to be near his family. He was a faithful member of Park Avenue Church of God in Herrin.

On Nov. 8 1935, he married Velma L. Overby. They celebrated 63 years of marriage and she preceded him in death on May 11, 1999.

He was also preceded in death by a 3-year-old son, Hubert Darrell Groves; and a sister, Belva Anderson.

He is survived by: one son, Lt. Col. Charles "Rick" Groves, U.S. Army (Ret.) and wife, Anne of Indianapolis; one daughter, LaVon Groves of Sikeston; one brother, Hubert Groves of Johnston City; one sister, Novella Groves of Johnston City; four grandchildren, Patrick and Jeffrey Groves of Indianapollis, PFC Benjamin Butdorft, U.S. Army, Ft. Hood, Texas and Jamie Butdorf of Sikeston; and one great-grandson, Carter Butdorf.

A celebration of his life will be held at a later date.
