NEW MADRID -- The New Madrid County Central boys got an early preview of their first round district opponent Tuesday night, defeating the Kennett Indians 61-49. The Eagles, who will play Kennett again Saturday night in the first round of the Class 3, District 1 Tournament, outscored Kennett 18-11 in the fourth quarter to blow open a close game. Kony Ealy had a game-high 18 points and Josh Minner added 12 for NMCC as the Eagles finished their regular season at 13-10. Kennett was led by Randrick Caruthers and Jimmy Gooden who each finished with 11 points. The two teams will meet again at 7 p.m. Saturday in Portageville. NMCC won a thrilling junior varsity contest 39-38. The Eagles won at the buzzer on a Josh Darter stick-back. Issac Ray led NMCC with 13 while Jimmy Gooden had 20 for Kennett.
DONIPHAN -- The Charleston Bluejays lost a tough overtime game to the Doniphan Dons 56-54 Tuesday.
The game was close the entire way with Doniphan leading 28-27 at the half and the game tied in regulation at 44.
Donald Dixon had 30 points for the Bluejays who were playing without Brian Parham who is still nursing an injury.
Charleston (15-9) will take on Caruthersville at 1 p.m. Saturday in the first round of the Class 3, District 1 Tournament held in Portageville.
CLARKTON -- East Prairie picked up a big win Tuesday night defeating Clarkton 78-71.
Tony Jones had 33 points and M.C. Williams had 22 for the Eagles (12-11).
East Prairie will be back in action Saturday in the first round of the Class 3, District 1 Tournament when they take on Scott City at 4 p.m. in Portageville. Puxico 73, Richland 56
PUXICO -- Puxico's five starters did all the scoring and the Indians used a big third quarter to overcome a five point half-time deficit and defeated the visiting Richland Rebels, 73-56, in a matchup of SCAA teams Tuesday. The two teams will be again in the first round of the Class 2, District 2 tournament at Chaffee on Saturday. "Defensively we are going to have to step up about three notches next time we play them (Richland)," Puxico coach Josh Dowdy said. "We're going to have to have better defensive intensity for four quarters, not just one." Richland got 20 points from Drew Thornton, 15 from Mikey Latham and 11 from Nick Harris, and the Rebels out-scored the Indians on their home court in each of the first two quarters to take a 35-30 lead. Puxico came out in the third and clamped on the defense while racking up 28 points to surge ahead. "We just came out and executed our offense better in the third," Dowdy said. "We got a good defensive effort, but we're going to have to perform like that for four quarters when we play them again." David Crain scored 20 points to lead the Indians, while Kerry McClure finished with 17, John Smith netted 16, Matt Allison dropped in 14 and J Hon hit two 3-pointers for six points. Puxico will play its last regularseason game Thursday at home against Twin Rivers before opening district play on Saturday. Puxico improved to 14-9 overall and 4-2 in SCAA play. Oran 82, Woodland 72
MARBLE HILL -- Cody Campbell scored 33 points to lead the Eagles. Kurt Rendleman added 12 points in the win. Caleb Lee, Adam Cureton and Kyle Reynolds all scored 16 points to pace the Cardinals. VARSITY GIRLS Kennett 56, NMCC 49
NEW MADRID -- The Kennett Lady Indians upset the New Madrid County Central Lady Eagles 56-49 on the road Tuesday night. Kennett, trailing 24-20 at the half, outscored the Lady Eagles 16-9 in the third quarter to take a slim 36-33 lead. The Lady Indians then added to that lead in the fourth to get past NMCC. Shameika Williams and Tameika Williams scored 20 and 19 respectively for NMCC (8-14) while Kennett was led by Hope Sparks' 16. Jerica Wheeler added 12 for the Lady Eagles.
