SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Post 114 Junior American Legion team captured the SIU Wood Bat Tournament championship over the 4th of July weekend.
Post 114 swept five games on the way to the tournament title, opening with a 6-2 win over DuQuoin, Ill., in pool play. Continuing in pool play, Sikeston pounded Wood River, Ill., 15-1, then handed Mattoon, Ill., an 11-4 defeat while advancing to the semifinals.
Sikeston edged Lone Oak, Ky., 8-7, to reach the final against Salem, Ill. A 7-2 victory over Salem clinched the championship.
The Junior Legion team's tournament run was another highlight in an already stellar season.
Sikeston's record is 30-6 overall including finishing first in regular-season district play with a 9-1 mark.
By virtue of its first-place finish, Sikeston is the top seed and host of the District Tournament which opened on Wednesday at V.F.W. Memorial Stadium with Scott County facing Cape Girardeau.
Sikeston meets the winner today at 5 p.m.
