Board makes appointments
MINER -- Miner's Board of Aldermen made appointments to the city's boards and commissions during a special meeting Thursday.
Mayor Betty Barnes again nominated five representatives from Ward 1 for the Board of Adjustments: Loy Overbey, Kathy Walters, Bill Stover, Scott Ezell and Don Foster. Karen Davidson was nominated as the alternate member.
Alderman Peggy Holman then asked Barnes to consider changing two of the nominations to include residents from Ward 2.
"These people are fine," Barnes said.
"You told me to bring two, I brought you seven or six," Holman said.
"These people have no favoritism," Barnes said. "These people represent all the town, not half of the town."
The Board approved the nominations with a 3-1 vote with Holman casting the only vote against the list.
Board members next unanimously appointed nine members to the city's Planning and Zoning Commission with representatives from both wards. Appointed were: Frank Tatum, Janet Williams, Grace Fitzpatrick, Lynn Wilson, Dorma Angle, Bill Unger, Randy Allen, Charles McLemore and Steve Finley.
Also unanimous was the vote on two Tourism Commission appointees, Deloris Smith and Janet Williams; and two Tourism Advisory Board appointees, Paul Williams and John Tarter.
Holman again entered the only dissenting vote on the appointment of Vinita Wilburn as the new city treasurer.
Following the meeting, a citizen voiced his surprise at the Board's decision to replace Loraine Simpson as treasurer after her 30 years of service.
In other business, the Board authorized the mayor and city clerk to execute documents for the sale of some city property to R&B Development LLC of Springfield, the parent company for Redneck Trailer Supplies.
The property was originally purchased by the city with the intention of building the tourism center there but was no longer needed as another location for the center adjacent to a forthcoming new Drury Inn was decided on.
The final item of business for the meeting was the addition of Todd's Towing Service to the city's towing rotation which was approved with three votes in favor and Holman abstaining due to a conflict of interest.
