SIKESTON - For the first time in a quarter-century a new postmaster will be selected for Sikeston. Selection will be made from 15 men who are candidates for the position left vacant by the death of postmaster Pleas Malcolm. The opening may not be filled for six months. Meanwhile, Ewart Taylor, a veteran postal employee, is serving as active postmaster.

BENTON - Staci Shoaf was crowned the 18th annual Miss Neighbor Day Queen in Benton Friday night. Miss Shoaf, a student at Scott Central High School, is the daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Ray Shoaf of Morley. First runner-up was Carie Beth Evans of Sikeston, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Roy Evans. PORTAGEVILLE - The University of Missouri Board of Curators on Thursday bestowed the title of "president emeritus" on outgoing president George Russell. Russell announced his retirement last month after saying he felt he had lost the board's confidence. His last day is Saturday. Dr. Melvin George, a former vice president at Missouri and former president of St. Olaf College, will take over as interim president. Russell is originally from Bertrand and attended high school in Sikeston.
