WASHINGTON -- Joe M. Hampton, 85, died March 12, 2007, at the Grandview Healthcare Center in Washington.

Born Oct. 4, 1921, near Steele, son of the late David and Mary Hamlett Hampton, he was a retired plumbing contractor and lived most of his life in St. Charles and Robertsville. From 1992-2006 he lived in Dudley and New Madrid before moving back to Beaufort.

He was first married to Berniece Franks who preceded him in death in 1954. On Nov. 16, 1957, in Hernando, Miss., he married Mae G. Barber who preceded him in death on May 25, 1990. He later married Margaret Jimmerson and she preceded him in death in 2001.

One son, Terry Hampton; one stepson, George Leon Emory; two stepdaughters, Mary Esick and Pansy Barr; and three brothers, Charles Hampton Sr., Bob Hampton and Nub Hampton also preceded him in death.

Survivors include: one son, Bill Hampton of Yucaipa, Calif.; three daughters, Pat Hoeft of Beaufort, Wanda Leathers of LaBelle, Fla., and Mary Foster of Kennett; one stepdaughter, Faye Hopper of Nixa; one brother, George Hampton of Dexter; four sisters, Helen Naile of Farmington, Betty McCullough of Sikeston, Pauline Lindsey of Harrisburg, Ark., and Mildred Aaron of Anderson, Ind.; and 11 grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren.

Visitation is from 5-8 p.m. today at Watkins and Sons Funeral Home in Dexter where services will be conducted at 1 p.m. Thursday. The Rev. Tim Ingle of Bernie will officiate.

Burial will follow in the Dudley Cemetery.
