SIKESTON - Sherry Vanover of Bertrand was named Sikeston's Junior Miss Rodeo during a pageant at the Kingsway Mall Wednesday night. Miss Vanover is the 16-year-old daughter of Buddy and Marilyn Vanover. Gina Colbert, 17, of Campbell, who was chosen as first runner-up, is the daughter of Shelby and Ursey Colbert. SIKESTON - Several fans came out to visit and get new books signed by authors of the Heartland Writers Guild that participated in the Second Annual Heartland Festival of Books. The event hosted by the Book Bug and the Standard Democrat was conducted at the River Birch Mall on Friday. The 150 authors who attended the three-day conference came with manuscripts tucked into folders or hanging out of shoulder bags hoping to make the connections and eventually get published. Representatives from the top publishing houses attended the workshops. Authors could even schedule appointments with editors.

NEW MADRID - County residents will have a chance to learn things to alleviate some of the things they can do to alleviate some of the discomfort created by arthritis. Chrissy Warren, health educator at New Madrid County Health Department, will teach a seven week program, People with Arthritis can Exercise (PACE) at the Health Department.
