CARUTHERSVILLE - A car stolen in Arkansas was stopped after a 16-mile chase into Missouri.
A 4:40 a.m. Sunday, Pemiscot County deputies were advised of a pursuit from Arkansas into Missouri on Interstate 55. As the pursuit crossed the state line, Pemiscot County Sheriff deputies and members of the Steele Police Department joined the chase.
At the Caruthersville-Braggadocio exit, spike strips were deployed by sheriff's deputies in order to slow the suspect vehicle down, which was now reaching speeds in excess of 100 miles per hour, authorities reported. After the vehicle crossed the spike strips, the tires began to deflate, causing the vehicle to slow.
The pursuit continued, however now at a much slower pace. After about two miles as the vehicle approached the 16-mile marker, it struck the guard rail of a bridge. The vehicle came to rest a short distance from the bridge and law enforcement officials from Steele, Hayti and Pemiscot County took an 18-
year-old suspect into custody.
Felony charges are expected to be filed today by the Pemiscot County prosecuting attorney. The suspect is expected to be extradited to Arkansas where he is facing additional felony charges.
According to a news release issued by Pemiscot County Sheriff Tommy Greenwell, the car is believed to have been stolen from Blytheville, Ark.
