ST. CHARLES -- Oran's baseball team impressed with a strong performance against large-school opponents at the St. Charles Tournament this weekend.
"We did all right this weekend," said Oran assistant coach Larry Boshell, of the Eagles fifth-place finish in the 12-team tournament. "We saw some good pitching and a lot of big, strong kids."
The Class 1 Eagles (11-2) won their first three games with victories over Class 4 Riverview Gardens, Class 3 St. Charles West and Class 4 Truman of Independence before falling to Class 4 Francis Howell North.
Oran opened the tournament with a 9-3 win over Riverview Gardens on Friday.
Alex Chasteen went 5 2/3 innings for the win, allowing three runs on four hits, with five strikeouts and five walks.
Kody Campbell paced the Eagle offense with a 2-for-5 day, including a triple and one RBI. Austin Dumey went 1-for-5 with a double, Chase Seyer 1-for-5 with a triple, Tyler Beardslee 1-for-4, Paul Bucher 1-for-2 and Chris Asmus 1-for-4 with a double and two RBIs.
In the second game, Oran pounded St. Charles West early, running out to a 14-2 lead, then held on as St. Charles closed the gap with eight runs in the fifth and sixth innings.
The final score was Oran 15, St. Charles 10.
Dumey earned the win in five innings of work, allowing six runs (three earned) on seven hits with four strikeouts and two walks.
Chase Seyer closed the game, facing five hitters for the final four outs.
Eight Eagles joined the 12-hit parade led by Joey Williams (2-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs), Campbell (2-for-5, one RBI), Bucher (2-for-4 with a double and one RBI), Chase Seyer (1-for-3 with a triple and three RBIs), Chasteen (1-for-4, two RBIs), Dumey (1-for-5, two RBIs), Beardslee (1-for-4, RBI) and Caleb Seyer 1-for-3 with a triple.
The Eagles went into Saturday's action tied with three other teams with a 2-0 mark. The tournament format matched Oran, the Pool D winner, against the second-place teams from Pool A and B.
First up was Truman, who the Eagles romped past 12-2 in six innings. Bucher went the distance to pick up the win. He allowed two runs on six hits, struck out five and walked one.
Chase Seyer blasted a three-run homer while Dumey was the hit leader with a 3-for-4, one RBI performance. Campbell kept his hot bat alive with two hits in four trips with a RBI, Beardslee went 2-for-4 with a RBI, Williams 1-for-2 with a triple and two RBIs, Caleb Seyer 1-for-2 and Asmus 1-for-3.
Now at 3-0 with a shot to get into the championship bracket, the Eagles succumbed to Francis Howell North, 18-3, in six innings.
Oran committed an uncharacteristic eight errors in the loss.
Said Boshell, "We played Truman on that field and got all the bounces, but against Francis Howell North, they went the other way."
Chase Seyer took the loss and the Eagles managed only four hits, split between Caleb Seyer, Dumey, Chasteen and Asmus.
Oran resumes the season against district rival Advance at Oran at 4 p.m.
CARBONDALE -- Sikeston's girls soccer team notched its first-ever win in the Carbondale Tournament over the weekend.
The Lady Bulldogs (5-6) finished with a 2-1 record in the 12-team tourney, held on Friday and Saturday.
"We had never won a game in that tournament, so it was nice to not only win a game, but go 2-1," said Sikeston coach Derrick Long.
Sikeston, outshot 22-7, dropped its opener to Carbondale by a 4-1 score. Goalie Paige Silverthorn stopped 17 shots.
Abbi Keefer tallied the Bulldogs lone goal off an assist from Jennifer Millington.
Later Friday, Sikeston turned the tables on Champaign Central with a 3-0 victory. Champaign, with basically an identical roster, had defeated the Bulldogs 3-0 in last year's tournament.
Keefer scored two goals and Jordi Ferrell added one while Laura Atchison, Ariel Reynolds and Arriane MacGillvray had assists.
Silverthorn posted the shutout as the Bulldogs outshot Champaign 24-7.
Alli Blurton's goal with 11 minutes left, off an assist from Keefer, lifted Sikeston to a 1-0 win over Highland on Saturday.
Silverthorn recorded her second straight save to preserve the victory.
Sikeston hosts SEMO Conference foe Cape Central at the Sikeston Complex on Tuesday with a junior varsity start time of 5 p.m.
SIKESTON -- The Sikeston High School golf team concluded a busy week with three matches against some of the area's top teams.
The Bulldogs hosted Jackson and Dexter at the Sikeston Country Club on Tuesday, traveled to Jackson's Kimbeland Country Club for a match with Jackson and Notre Dame on Wednesday, then competed in a dual at Kennett on Thursday, all nine-hole events.
On Tuesday, Sikeston's 176 team score was third-best to Dexter's 162 and Jackson's 167. Dee Bizzell shot the low round for Sikeston with a 41.
The Bulldogs finished third again in a very competitive match on Wednesday. Jackson posted a 159 to outdistance Notre Dame's 166 and Sikeston's 168.
Dakota Trevino, with a 39, led the Bulldogs to their low team score of the season.
Sikeston wrapped up the week with a 10-stroke victory over Kennett, 173 to 183. Trevino and Bizzell tied for medalist honors with Kennett's Tyson Privett with 42s.
"The team won only one match but I saw several players show great improvement and the team posted its best score of the season at Jackson," said Sikeston coach Rick Oetting. "Jared Kruger has been lowering his scores into the mid- and lower-40s and Joseph Bowman shot a personal best of 43 at home."
Added Oetting, "This is the time of year that you expect improvements. The courses are starting to green up from the warmer weather and playing conditions have improved immensely. Anytime the team travels and the young men can shoot a personal best, I have to be encouraged for our chances at the upcoming tournaments."
The Caruthersville Tournament, scheduled for today, has been canceled due to the devastation of the recent tornado.
The 'Dogs host Kennett on Tuesday at the Sikeston Country Club.

Sikeston did not participate in Saturday's Marshall County (Ky.) Invitational track meet.
Next action for the Bulldogs is at Dexter on Tuesday at 4 p.m.
