DEXTER -- Last year was what Dexter head coach Kristen Vandeven called a "developmental year" for the Lady Bearcat's volleyball team. They finished with a 16-15-1 overall record (4-3 conference record) and did not fulfill their expectations with a fourth place finish during the conference tournament and a second place finish in the district tournament.
Cathryn Heil and Jessica Satterfield was a force for Dexter on the net during last year. They both share regional and conference awards including SCAA All-Tournament Team, All-Regional second team and All-Conference first team.
Being their senior year, coach Vandeven is expecting a lot out of both of them for their final season as Lady Bearcats.
"I expect Jess (Satterfield) and Cat (Heil) to be our team leaders this season," Vandeven said. "They have worked hard over the past year to become really dominant players at the net. They have big jobs to do for our team, as they're our two setters and also two of our power hitters. They are enthusiastic about the game of volleyball and I look for them to give their last year their all."
Dexter lost Brooke Thrower to graduation who served as their libero. The libero for a volleyball team is considered a defensive specialist which Thrower was just that. She was named Dexter's defensive player of the year. Thrower was the only senior that was lost for this year's experienced bunch.
"All but two of our girls have seen varsity action," said Vandeven. "I am hoping we got through all our growing pains during last season and are ready to get after it this season."
Between Heil and Satterfield, Vandeven is expecting to send out Kayla Joyner (sr.), Brittany Bedford (jr.), Abbie Warren (jr.), Elisha Flanigan (soph.) and McKenzie Mitchell (fr.) for the varsity squad.
Dexter participated in an Arkansas State University team camp this summer where they finished second in the gold bracket of the camp tournament. Vandeven said with each practice and, eventually, each game will help them progress this season.
"This is a very coachable group of girls who have a lot of heart and also have a fierce competitive nature about them," Vandeven said. "I'm hoping they can start off playing well and keep the momentum going throughout the season. If we can stay healthy and just keep our heads on straight, it will be an enjoyable season for the Lady Bearcats."
The Lady Bearcats will start their season at Kennett on Sept. 2.
