CARUTHERSVILLE - The arrest of two people apparently has led to the solving of recent copper thefts.

At 11:30 p.m. Tuesday, officers with the Caruthersville Police Department noticed a suspicious vehicle traveling on the levee near Highway 84. During the course of their investigation, according to a news release issued by City Marshal Chris Riggs, the officers observed a person being dropped off along the levee apparently to burglarize Churchill's Used Car Lot.

When officers attempted to make contact, the suspect fled on foot. Following a brief pursuit, an officer fired a Taser gun, apprehending the 24-year-old suspect without further incident.

The man is being held in the Pemiscot County Jail pending the filing of formal charges. Also he is being held for theft of copper wire from the AT&T Phone Company on Sixth Street, Riggs said.

The driver of the vehicle, a 46-year-old woman, was also taken into custody in connection with the incident.

Police are currently seeking several other suspects in connection with the thefts and further arrests are anticipated, according to the city marshal.
