Jan. 11, 1949

SIKESTON - Sikeston residents were shaken at 9:44 p.m. last night by an earth tremor which was reported in four states. No damage of any consequences has been reported in the city but a panic was narrowly averted at the Malone Theater.

LILBOURN - New officers for the Lilbourn Kiwanis Club were installed Thursday night by Division 15 Lt. Gov. Roger Sherman of Sikeston. They are Owen J. Taul, secretary/treasurer; Claude Stone Jr., president; and Terry Hawkins, vice president.

SIKESTON - Ashley Northington has been chosen to serve as the 1989 Kenny Rogers Cerebral Palsy Center Telethon poster child. She is the 3 1/2-year-old daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Paul Northington Jr. of Sikeston.

SIKESTON - Alice Aufdenberg and Carole Gilmore have started a support group for widows and widowers. They Help Each Other Spiritually (THEOS) is a national non-profit organization. The Sikeston chapter is open to any age widow or widower and to people from around the area.

SIKESTON - John Southern of Sikeston Riggs Wholesale was congratulated by Dolph Riggs II, owner, for his dedication to Riggs during a retirement ceremony. Southern retired after 41 years of service to the company. Southern was also a partner in the Sikeston store and is the only non-family member to be a partner in the company.

MATTHEWS - J.R. and Ruth Holman of Matthews were guests of honor for a family celebration of their 50th wedding anniversary on Dec. 20, 1998. The event was at the home of their daughter and son-in-law, Beverly and Mike Murphy of Sikeston.
