CAPE GIRARDEAU -- The Charleston Bluejays overcame a shaky start to defeat the No. 5 seed Advance Hornets on Monday night in the second round of the 2009 seMissourian Christmas tournament.

After falling behind 9-7 at the end of the first quarter, the Bluejays began pounding away. A 30-point second quarter gave Charleston a 14-point advantage at the half and they would never look back.

Deonte Jones led the Bluejays with 17 points. Demonte Farmer added 11 while Fabreizio Wright had 10.

Advance was led by Luke Steil's 20 points. Darren VanGennip had 11 on the night.

Charleston will now face the No. 1 seed Scott County Central tonight at 6 p.m. for a chance to play in the championship game. Advance moves into the fifth place bracket following the loss and will take on Oran at 3 p.m.

Scott Central 93, Oran 46

The Scott County Central Braves cruised to the semifinal round of the tournament on Monday afternoon in a 93-46 rout of the No. 8 seed Oran Eagles.

The Braves held a slim eight-point lead after the first quarter aided by a short runner as time expired by Oran's Reece Mangels. But, a dominating defensive second period by Scott Central held Oran to just four points as the Braves extended their lead to 35 points at the half.

Scott Central's Otto Porter led all scorers with 28 points while Bobby Hatchett added 23. Stewart Johnson had 16 points as well.

Jon Morrow led the Eagles with 18 points. Mangels chipped in with eight.

Meadow Heights 75, Kelly 45

The Meadow Heights Panthers sent the Kelly Hawks home on Monday afternoon with a 75-45 consolation win.

This was Kelly's second loss of the tournament while Meadow Heights advanced to the semifinals round of the loser's bracket.

Kelly was down by just six points after the first eight minutes of play but allowed 32 points in the second and quickly fell out of contention with a 47-26 deficit to try and erase at the half.

Dustin Crowden led the Hawks with 12 points while Trent Felter and Michael Fisher added 9 and seven respectively. Dustin Hubler had 16 for the Panthers while Adam Walker and Calen Buerck each added 13 a piece.

Meadow Heights will face Delta in the consolation semifinals today at noon.

Notre Dame 72, Oak Ridge 38

The No. 2 seed Notre Dame Bulldogs took care of the Oak Ridge Bluejays in a 72-38 victory.

After a seemingly close first half, the Bulldogs began to widen their gap in the second half. A 28-17 Notre Dame lead at half time turned into a 49-27 lead at the end of the third quarter.

Jacob Tolbert led all scorers with 22 points.

Notre Dame will play the Cape Central Tigers at 7:30 p.m. tonight for a chance at the championship game while the No. 7 seed Oak Ridge will play Jackson at 4:30 p.m. in the fifth place bracket.

Cape Central 53, Jackson 38

Cape Central's James Lane put an emphatic end to their game against rival Jackson on Monday night as the Tigers upset the Indians 53-38.

With just seconds remaining at the end of the fourth quarter, Lane, who finished with 16 points, found himself on the open end of an unguarded court and put down a two-handed dunk that got Cape Central fans out of their seat.

Cape Central pulled off the first upset of the tournament as a No. 6 seed defeated the No. 3 seed.

The Bell City Cubs eliminated the Scott City Rams on Monday morning as the Cubs came away with a 68-55 victory.

Jeff Long led the Cubs with 19 points while Skylor Blackler added 18. Scott City's Skylar Cobb led all scorers with 21 points.

Bell City remains in the hunt for the consolation championship as their next challenge comes against the No. 11 seed Leopold Wildcats at 1:30 this afternoon.

The Chaffee Red Devils tournament run also came to an end on Monday night as they fell to the Leopold Wildcats 55-44.

A 19-2 second quarter in favor of the Wildcats separated the two squads after Chaffee gained an 8-5 first quarter lead.

Alex Crowe led the Red Devils with 15 points.
