CHAFFEE -- As the Lady Devils Invitational came to a close Monday evening, the Chaffee 4x400-meter relay were determined to put an exclamation point on the event.
The Lady Devils foursome, made up of Taylor Kirchdoerfer, Anna Ayers, Luisa Boschan and Elli Sigman, rolled to a first place finish in the event while setting a personal best time of 4:32.8. It also put the finishing touches on a team victory for the Lady Devils in the 12-team event.
"Each time we run, we don't care if we beat the team in front of us," Ayers said. "We are just worried about our personal time. I think we did really good today."
The Lady Devils team has been facing tough competition all season, competing in high profile meets like the Jackson Invitational and Potosi Invitational to name a few. Competing in such meets has helped Chaffee improve with their long-term goals set on the Class 1 State Meet.
"We have ran in some big meets this year and we face a lot of 3A and 4A schools that aren't in our district," Ayers said. "And we've been beating them, so when we get in our district it will get a lot easier. Our long term goal is just to prepare for state. We want up on that podium."
While competing with larger schools helps in the long run, it can sometime be nerve-wracking for the girls.
"There's a lot of pressure and then when you do well you just feel so good," Sigman said.
As a team, Chaffee did very well on Monday, winning their own meet going away. The Lady Devils finished with 119 points with New Madrid County Central a distant second with 90 points.
The Lady Devils had more success in just the 4x400 relay as well, placing first in five other events. Boschan won the 1,600-meter run with a time of 5:39 while Sigman won the long jump with a jump of 14 feet, 6 inches. Sarah Sigman won the triple jump with a jump of 28-9 and Kirchdoerfer won the 800-meter run with a time of 2:34.
The Lady Devils also placed first in the 4x800 relay with a time of 11:15.76.
"The girls did a good job and anytime you win your own invitational that is definitely a positive," said Chaffee girls coach Travis Calkins.
"Basically our whole season is directed toward trying to win our conference and then comes districts, sectionals and state. That is basically what we've been pointing toward all year. We've been going to a lot of these bigger meets and they've really seen some good competition and we hope that pays off come post-season time."
Chaffee wasn't the only local school to put together a good performance Monday.
Scott City had three first place finishes, with Melanie Lacey winning the 3,200-meter run (12:52) and Stephanie Essner winning the 400 (1:02.92). Scott City also took first in the 4x200-meter relay (1:55.15)
Kelly's Londyn Backfisch placed first in the high jump (4-8) and 200-meter dash (26.09) while East Prairie's Jennifer Nicholson took first in the discus (128-6) and shot put (37-2).
New Madrid County Central's Brittany Johnson took first in the 300-meter hurdles (52.60).
While the girls had their day on Monday, the boys will be in action on Thursday when Chaffee hosts the Red Devil Invitational.
"We pride ourselves on putting on a good meet," Calkins said. "We like when we split the boys and girls up separate. It really makes for an efficient meet."
The Chaffee girls will be back in action Friday at the always-tough Poplar Bluff Invitational before both the boys and girls take part in the SEMO South Conference meet on Monday at East Prairie.
"Competition makes you what you are, pushes you and you exceed your limits," Kirchdoerfer said. "It's exciting. We just want to go to state. We want up on that podium."
