Sikeston football team wins shootout

TROY, Tenn. -- The Sikeston Bulldogs opened the season the season with a 42-34 road victory over Obion County Central in the first ever meeting between the two schools.

The Bulldogs racked up 560 yards of total offense and were able to hold off a late rally by the Rebels, who fall to 1-1 on the season.

Sikeston amassed 447 yards on the ground while Obion County Central threw for 372 yards on a whopping 42 attempts.

The Bulldogs' offense was led by first-year starting quarterback Trey Lewis, who looked sharp in his debut, throwing for 113 yards on 8-of-13 passing while rushing for 89 yards with a touchdown.

Senior Darryl Howard led the Bulldog rushing attack with 141 yards with a touchdown. Junior James Watson had 116 yards with three touchdowns and sophomore Kyland Gross had 94 yards, including a momentum-shifting 64-yard run just before halftime to extend the Bulldogs' lead to 28-12.

Obion County quarterback Trey Phipps completed 24-of-41 passes for 330 yards with four touchdowns and one interception. Wide receiver Mason McGraw completed an option pass for 42 yards as well.

Sikeston led by as much as 42-20 after Lewis scored on a 2-yard run with 11:52 left in the game.

But Obion County's no-huddle passing attack proved to give the Bulldog defense fits down the stretch as Phipps hit McGrew on TD passes of 7 and 27 yards, the latter of which came with 3:19 left in the game.

Obion's onside kick attempt was recovered by Sikeston's Howard and the Bulldogs were able to run out the remaining time on the clock to preserve the victory.
