CHAFFEE -- Playing Oran in the second half of a double-header Monday afternoon, the Chaffee Lady Devils surrendered 16 hits and to the Lady Eagles 10-3.
Though the Lady Devils allowed four runs in the first inning, Chaffee was able to stay within striking distance of the Lady Eagles through three frames, trailing 5-3 entering the fourth.
Oran scored five runs from the fourth on, however, all the while keeping the Lady Devils offense at bay.
Morgan Todt had a big day for the Lady Eagles. Besides earning the win pitching all seven innings, she helped her own cause going 3-for-4 at the plate with two doubles and five RBI.
Leading Chaffee's effort was leadoff hitter Adrienne Eichhorn, who went 2-for-4 on the contest.
Earlier in the afternoon, the Lady Devils were unable to keep up with a tough Perryville Lady Pirates offense, falling 12-1 in five innings on the mercy rule.
"Everybody around here knows they're a very good hitting team," Chaffee coach Shawn Powderly said. "We expected that coming in. We knew we had to play perfect and make all the plays and we didn't quite do that today."
Already leading 5-1 after three innings, Perryville tacked on another seven runs in the final two frames to lock up the win.
With two outs in the fifth, Chaffee loaded the bases in an effort to keep the game alive. Unfortunately for the Lady Devils, Perryville secured the final out before another run could cross the plate as left fielder Sierra Miller popped up to the catcher to end the ball game.
Though her team loss, Chaffee's Hannah Bedwell was excited to see improvements from team compared to recent weeks.
"We actually played really well considering playing this team in a tournament this past weekend and they killed us," Bedwell said. "Our defense was a lot better this game. There was a couple plays that killed us that could have been better, but overall I had fun this game and I think everybody else did despite some adversity we've had."
With most their base runners reaching on walks, the Lady Devils only managed two hits on the game. Those came from Eichhorn and Maria Smith who both singled in the fifth to break up the no-hitter being thrown by Perryville's Casey Hotop.
With his team finding ways to get on base, Powderly sees more clutch hitting as a key in the Lady Devil's future success.
"Got to string a few hits together," he said. "We don't have as much speed as a lot of teams so we really have to string hits together to make things happen.
"We start doing that and I think we'll be in good shape."
Now at 2-12 on the season, Chaffee will travel to Delta to play the Lady Bobcats today at 4 p.m.
