A sidewalk extension and improvement project by the city of New Madrid is nearing completion. The city received more than $100,000 in federal stimulus funding to extend sidewalks from the skate park to the Mississippi River levee and along Main Street. Above Jethero Gater with Gater Construction of Sikeston breaks apart old sidewalk near the intersection of Pinnell and Main streets. City Administrator John Gilbert said officials will seek additional federal funding to extend sidewalks to the Hunter-Dawson State Historic Site and the Hunter-Dawson Park as well as to provide additional lighting and to make the Main Street sidewalks all handicap accessible.
