SIKESTON -- The Sikeston Bulldog wrestling team looked similar to another Bulldog squad on Wednesday night by dictating tempo and setting the tone in nearly all of their matches with the visiting New Madrid County Central Eagles.
The Bulldogs came away with a resounding 56-15 dual win over NMCC on the mats as they honored their three seniors, Dustin Wells, Faylon Marshall and Greg Smith, during their last home meet of the season at the Sikeston Field House.
"Overall, as a team, we were very, very good," said Sikeston wrestling coach Seth Harrell. "I saw some very good things and I though our intensity was outstanding. I thought we pushed the pace. It didn't look like we made very many mistakes."
Sikeston came away with four wins by pin, two by decision and four by forfeit. The only match to go the Eagles' way was in the 119-pound division where NMCC's Charles Taylor defeated Sikeston's Cody Middleton by a 13-6 decision.
"We went 6-1 in varsity matches, and really, that one loss, in my opinion, was an outstanding match," Harrell said. "Cody Middleton wrestled his butt off. Earlier this year he had a tough loss to the same kid (Taylor) and came back and wrestled extremely tough."
Although Taylor was the Eagles' only victory, they also received two forfeit victories and held their own in most matches.
"We were in a couple of matches and I really would have liked to of seen us finish better," NMCC head coach Arlen Pixley said. "You got to give (Sikeston) a lot of credit. They've been in some tough matches in their conference. Hopefully by district time, we can clean it up and win those tough matches like that.
"I'm proud of our guys. We've been working extremely hard."
"We really extended some matches tonight that earlier in the season we were out of the match real quick," added Pixley. "We've gotten better in that regard. We just have to continue to finish things."
Sikeston will travel to Jackson tonight to for a quad meet that will include Dexter and McClure North.
"This was a very good dual for us," said Harrell about Wednesday night. "They're technique looked very good, our effort was outstanding. We're really starting to put some things together."
